In recent months, the city of Lappeenranta has been undergoing a “Our Beaches" zoning project. I went to see the project at the city hall. In general, I was satisfied with the latest plans, but one thing in the plan annoyed me significantly. Although the harbor straight had already been identified as problematic during the plan preparation phase, almost nothing had been done to the straight.
In my opinion, the biggest problem with the straight is that it doesn't contain anything interesting for people, but is a mandatory pedestrian corridor full of parking spaces between the harbor square and the sandcastle. Although I recognize that there must be a lot of parking spaces in the harbor, I see them primarily as a necessary evil that just needs to be planned somewhere. I think the parking spaces should be removed from the harbor straight to make the straight more pleasant to walk. At least some of the parking spaces could be placed along the harbor road on both sides of the road, assuming that the road is widened somewhat.
Instead of parking spaces, I would like to create a walking environment that is as pleasant as possible for pedestrians. For example, some kind of park in the harbor would certainly be a good solution. On the other hand, there could also be more cafes or other activities on the harbor line that would make the harbor line interesting for people.
