First semester of LUT's electrical engineering studies – thoughts on combining work and studies

It has been one semester (eight weeks) since I started my second degree in the Bachelor's program in Electrical Engineering at LUT University. After the first semester is over, it is a good time to stop and reflect on the first weeks and experiences of combining work and study. The first day of university was very rewarding thanks to the diverse events of the freshmen weeks. It was a pleasure to get to know many new and talented freshmen. Although I am one Read more

Testing AR glasses

Has anyone ever wondered what test engineers do during their vacation? Testing of course! Since 2013 when Google Glass AR glasses were introduced, I have been following the development of AR glasses from time to time. In general, the development has been quite bumpy and there have been many attempts over the years to make AR glasses work. Currently, there are three different categories of AR glasses: I think the second category Read more

Titan game

During 2024 and 2025 I led a big game project in my free time. The game was made for the annual event for IT students called “Titeenit”, which was held in Lappeenranta this year. This year the game was MMO style and the idea was to capture pixels for your guild from as wide an area as possible for as long as possible. Some numbers related to the project: Many thanks to the awesome Read more

Communication between students and the city

In December 2024, around Independence Day, I was a bit of a slob twice regarding advertising and communication. The first time I was surprised when I asked my friends who were still studying to go to the “Finland’s Best Little Christmas” event. None of my friends had even heard of the event, even though the event’s advertisement had been running on a billboard near the university for months. I had noticed the event myself months earlier. The second time I was surprised Read more

Candidate in regional elections from outside of the welfare area

It is easy to think that the leading roles in the welfare area on the regional council should be occupied by people who know the healthcare system well. This is probably partly true, but I think there is also room in the regional council for people from outside the welfare area. However, the most important thing in politics is not precise knowledge of practical matters, but representing people, bringing in perspectives and the right values. A good council needs a diverse Read more

Master of Science in Engineering as a student candidate in the municipal elections

At first it may seem a bit strange that as a Master of Science in Engineering I would primarily focus on students in the elections. However, upon closer examination this makes sense. As a Master of Science in Engineering, I have had time to go through the entire university path and therefore know student life and the university world almost better than the back of my hand. In addition, as a big bonus, I have already had time to live in Lappeenranta for a few years during my studies. Read more

Improving analytics in the area of well-being

The welfare area serves over one hundred thousand South Karelians. The large number of customers inevitably produces a huge amount of data, such as patient information and financial figures. Although there is a lot of information, the welfare area's own data analysis capacity is quite limited. This is probably partly why, for example, savings models were commissioned from an external consultant. Data analysis would be very useful, because it can be used to guide operations. Read more

Posture in the activities of the regional council

The first term of office of the regional councils began in 2022. The first term has generally been seen as a practice run for the new operating model. This is understandable considering that the current welfare area is quite different compared to the previous municipality-led model. In the first term, the regional council operated as simply as possible and did not, among other things, utilize boards in its operations. Although this may have been appropriate in the first term, I think in the second Read more

Opinions about the fortress marquee

Lappeenranta's birthdays in 2024 were amazing. The birthday party included many good innovations, but one of the best was the marquee that served many events. I think it was an excellent decision to rent the marquee for 2025 as well. Currently, the marquee is rented for the festive period. However, I think it would be wise to find out how much it would cost to get your own marquee and how much you could potentially save by having your own marquee. Read more

Weeran block sandpit

The sand pit in the Weera block has been a nuisance to the cityscape since autumn 2021. The mayor made an announcement about the matter in the autumn, where he said that the area of the pit will be cleaned up temporarily. Although cleaning up is a reasonable temporary solution, I think it is high time to start construction and put the site in order. Understandably, the situation is challenging, because the construction costs are high and the shopping center Read more
