A new ice rink/arena was planned for Lappeenranta for years. The latest decision according to the new ice rink, at least not yet, but the old ice rink is being repaired. In my opinion, the decision not to build a new arena was a bad one. The new arena would have brought a much-needed new large event space to Lappeenranta and shown that this city also dares to do things. I think that of the locations that were presented, building an arena in the city center would have been the best option. The events in the arena would have brought more life to the city center on event nights. In addition dense city center construction increases the accessibility of services and the vitality of the city, so from this perspective too, bringing the arena to the city center would have been an ideal solution.
Although the collapse of the arena project was a very unfortunate incident, I do not see it as reasonable to reopen the matter. Even worse than the collapse of the project is the vague vaping, which was practiced a lot during the arena project. Vaping is the worst poison for the development of the city. There are other positive aspects to the cancellation of the project. The collapse of the arena project saved the city a significant amount of money, which can now be utilized in other interesting projects. At best, other smaller projects can achieve even more positive results than one large project.
